I Just Booked My Plane Ticket to Belize… Now What?

First of all—yay, you’re going to Belize! Booking your plane ticket is a huge step (and probably the most expensive one), so congrats on locking it in. Now comes the fun part: planning the adventure of a lifetime. Whether you're headed to the islands, the jungle, or a bit of both, here's a guide to help you feel confident, prepped, and totally pumped for your Belize getaway.

1. Finalize Your Accommodations

Casa Cristal

If you haven’t booked your stay yet, now’s the time. Belize has options for every kind of traveler—from beachfront casitas and jungle lodges to boutique resorts and private villas.

Insider Tip: If you're staying on Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, choose somewhere with easy access to a golf cart (more on that below). And wherever you book, consider booking direct to save on platform fees and get the best customer service.

At Stay Floreo, we specialize in offering luxurious oceanfront villas and resort condos on Ambergris Caye, providing the perfect base for your unforgettable Belize experience.

2. Plan How You’ll Get to Your Destination

If you're flying into Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE), you'll need to plan how you're getting to your final destination.

Flight

Heading to the islands? You have two main options:

  • Local flight: Book a short flight (about 15 minutes) from BZE to San Pedro or Caye Caulker via Tropic Air or Maya Island Air. Super scenic, super fast.
  • Water taxi: Head to Belize City (about 30 mins from the airport), then take a water taxi to the islands. Cheaper, but takes longer—plan about 1.5 to 2 hours total.

Going inland? Arrange a shuttle or rental car to places like San Ignacio, Hopkins, or Placencia. Your host or resort can usually help coordinate this.

3. Check Passport & Entry Requirements

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. U.S., Canadian, U.K., and EU citizens don’t need a visa for stays under 30 days. Just make sure your return flight is documented and that you have proof of accommodations.

4. What to Pack for Belize

Belize is tropical, laid-back, and warm year-round—but with a few quirks. Here’s what should be on your packing list:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothes
  • Swimsuits (plural)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Bug spray (mosquitoes are no joke)
  • Water shoes or sandals with grip
  • A rain jacket (especially in wet season, June–Nov)
  • Dry bag for water activities
  • Copies of travel documents

And don’t forget… a sense of adventure

5. Book a Golf Cart (If You’re Staying on the Cayes)

San Pedro Golf Cart

In places like Ambergris Caye, golf carts are the main mode of transportation. Booking one in advance is highly recommended, especially during high season. Many vacation rentals, Stay Floreo included, can help you arrange one ahead of time—or suggest a reliable local company.

6. Plan (Or Don’t Plan) Your Activities

Mayan Ruins

You’ll want to strike a balance between adventure and relaxation. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Snorkeling or diving at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley
  • Exploring ancient Maya ruins like Xunantunich or Lamanai
  • Cave tubing or zip lining in the jungle
  • Chilling at Secret Beach (if you're on Ambergris Caye)
  • Island hopping or sunset sailing

Book popular tours in advance if you’re traveling in high season (Dec–April), but leave room for spontaneity—you’ll want those lazy hammock days too.  Our local team is happy to organize and book these great excursions for our guests.

7. Eat Like a Local

Once you’re on the ground, treat yourself to local favorites like:

  • Stewed chicken with rice & beans
  • Fry jacks for breakfast
  • Fresh seafood (grilled snapper, lobster in season)
  • Belizean hot sauce (trust us)
  • Fresh coconut water from a roadside stand

8. Stay Connected (or Don’t)

Most resorts and vacation rentals offer Wi-Fi, but if you want data on the go, consider picking up a local SIM card from Digi or Smart at the airport or in town. Belize is also a great place to unplug—so you do you.

9. Get Excited—You’re Almost in Paradise

Sunrise Belize

You’ve done the hard part—booked the flight. Now you’ve got the inside scoop to start prepping the rest. Belize is warm, welcoming, and full of wonder. Whether you’re diving into the blue, exploring ancient caves, or just watching the sunrise from your porch, your trip is going to be unforgettable.

See you in Belize!
